Our Lives
I am not the only person, and I
Will never be. Right now I am at school,
But she is staying at home and cleaning,
And he is now crying himself to sleep.
One man got shot, and one man proposed, but
This man is searching for food, and this girl
Is beat by her drunk father until the
Child in her stomach is dead. The boy
Falls in love, and the girl falls out of love.
The old woman has help crossing the street.
The 12-year-old girl ties a noose around
Her neck, letting her parents cry in grief.
But what do I care for these people’s needs?
I am selfish, and they don’t concern me.

A year ago in 9th grade English, we had finished reading Macbeth, and one of our assignments was to write a sonnet. I've never been good with poetry, but I wrote this more as a realization to the fact that I've always lived a generally gracious life without thought to the people around me that were suffering. This will always be something I will have to remind myself of in order to better myself and others to remove selfishness from my life and attempt to benefit the people around me.
