My Own Hero
I’m not a damsel in distress,
You don’t need to shine the way.
There’s no knight in shining armor,
No prince to save the day.
Go back to your far-away kingdom,
I don’t need your aid.
For I am my own hero,
And I do not need to be saved.
I don’t run from vicious dragons,
Don’t cower down in fear.
I speak the truth with blazing force
For all my demons to hear.
You won’t see me behind a rock,
Staying out of the way.
For I am my own hero,
And I have my own demons to slay.
I have no desire for highways,
With everything controlled.
I prefer the barren paths,
Their stories yet untold.
The routes I take are lonesome,
I often must be brave.
For I am my own hero,
And this path is mine to pave.
I am not a warrior,
I don’t have a Samurai sword.
There are no knives in my back pocket,
No Ms. Olympia award.
My strength may be lacking,
But I’m not consumed with fright.
For I am my own hero,
And I have my own battles to fight.
There’s a story that no one talks about,
It’s not a fairy tale.
When you close the book and realize,
That so-called heroes fail.
But I am the protagonist,
Through this darkness I will shine.
For I am my own hero,
And this story is mine.
