“I’ve never wanted to write the kind of lyrics that forward plot. I wanted them to take us into what cannot be said and what can only be felt.” -Steven Sater

you spotted me inside of the crowd

you noticed i looked mature for my age

i didn’t know you were hunting me down

the focus of your lascivious gaze

my mom yelled at me

so i came to your house

like a refugee

so i’d be safe and sound

and we’d never speak of the things we were doing wrong

you smiled at me

we were playing hide and seek

forever safe inside your paradise

late night movies

you were always there for me

how could my nightmare feel so nice?

it starts off and i’m feeling like i’m a moth to your flame

does this mean that i’m the one who’s to blame?

i was praying for a savior, you’re the person who came

now we’re playing the most dangerous game

the weeks go by

you and i playing house

i don’t know why

but i’m missing my past

i loved it here

but i’m starting to doubt

unbreakable heaven, how long can it last?

feeling empty

longing for my home

rose colored glasses started to fade

you’ll be upset

if i leave you alone

on christmas eve,

that’s when i’ll escape

you’re fast asleep

and i know it’s time to leave

i swear i won’t forget this paradise

goodbye baby

thanks for all you’ve done for me

that’s when my nightmare came to life

it starts off and i see them there laughing without shame

is my family really glad i’m away?

like i’m some sort of stranger and they’ve forgotten my name

guess it’s back to the most dangerous game

back home without a sound is the way that i came

can’t risk losing the most dangerous game

but he needs to know the truth and i’m so sorry to complain

i need out of the most dangerous game

you’ve got me missing soft pretzels and my mother’s soft hands when i fall

chillin’ with my best friends, laughing as we stroll through the mall

and i know you said you loved me

and i promised i would give you my all

but it’s hard in here, you make it hard

and then you told me that you caught me

when i snuck out before christmas night

that was when you got angry

and you screamed at me during our first fight

then you locked the door behind me

and i tried to escape with all my might

now i’m scared down here, you make me scared

thought you would play fair but i’m the one who got played

forever trapped in the most dangerous game

i was praying for a savior now i’m praying to be saved

get me out of the most dangerous game

am i really the one who is to blame?

manipulated by the sick and depraved?

by a predator and with no escape?

get me out of the most dangerous game

The author's comments:

This song, whose title is derived from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, is from my collection of lyrics called crimes of passion. These lyrics are inspired by Kate Wallis’s storyline in Season 1 of Freeform’s Cruel Summer.
