Racing like a rat trying to escape the maze.

Putting in eight hours, constantly stuck in a haze

Paycheck, the sweet drug keeping me trapped in the game

Always thirsting for more, oh what a shame.

Searching like an eagle for the American dream

But it’s all a lie or so it would seem.

Told me I was hard working because of my muddy boots

Yet we are expendable to the ones in the suits

Hunting like a lion putting meat on the table

Am I going crazy or is it the economy that's unstable?

How green I was when I was first hired

Can’t ask for a raise or I’ll be fired

Working like Atlas, the weight of the world on my back.

Trying to provide for my precious kids: Julie, Tim, and Jack

King Midas’s money making rich men richer

If I had a wish, make income flow in quicker

Racing like a rat trying to escape the maze

What will it take to get me out of this daze?

The author's comments:

My name is Dylan Weiss, and I am a junior at Tenafly High School. My inspiration for this poem was the constant struggle and competition in this world for money and the opression in the workplace. The poem is about questioning the 9-5.
