Is This What Results From Courage?
Is this what results from courage?
Because if becoming a heartbroken mess
With bloodshot eyes and streaked river faces
Is all that courage gets you,
Next time, I think I’ll pass.
When you devote all your time and energy
To one person,
And when you ask them if they feel the same way
And they reply with a “Hell, no,”
At first, it stings,
But this eventually fades into an itch you can never satisfy.
I guess this is where we stand.
You treat me as if I am invisible,
But this is okay,
As I’ve always wanted a super power.
You didn’t think all my pretty little words were enough,
You didn’t care for the sleep I sacrificed to wake up early and choose a cute outfit,
You didn’t bat an eye at the 100% I earned on my algebra test, the class I am failing,
Just because I wasn’t good enough for you.
Now, I quickly scroll through your posts that I used to instantly double tap,
I sit with my back turned to you and let the crap pour from your mouth,
I make sure my hands are massaged in coconut mint drop lotion, the scent you despise,
And I tear up every page of my journal that had your name scribbled onto it, surrounded by clusters of magenta hearts.
If our future couldn’t be filled
With white roses, diamond rings, and undying love,
Then, one day, when I can’t even remember the sound of your voice,
I hope you look back at what you gave up and that the regret will swallow you whole.
