Five Cents
I imagined her skipping along the red bricked roads,
as dim, gas-lit lamps lined the sidewalks.
Rosey cheeks matched her blush pink dress—
two blonde pigtails bounced as she pranced.
With only five cents in hand,
she thought, which candy should I buy?
Street lights reflected off mason jars.
She dreamed of discovering the sweet taste
of the hard canes resting inside—
cotton candy, watermelon, and butterscotch.
With only five cents in hand,
she thought, which candy should I buy?
To her left, a dark wood stained shelf stood.
Baby blue and cherry red bowls perched.
Inside is a yellow package,
chewy caramel on the inside.
With only five cents in hand,
she thought, which candy should I buy?
To her right, shiny nails stuck out of the wall.
Extended, plastic packages hung from each.
Inside appeared candy buttons—
a mini, rainbow colored, sugary delight.
With only five cents in hand,
she thought, which candy should I buy?
Now, I stand in the same dim, gas-lit streets and
look at the reflection on the mason jars,
baby blue and cherry red bowls, and shiny nails.
I peer inside the Haymarket Candy Store.
With only five dollars in hand,
I think, which candy should I buy?
