California Walks
Everything is dry.
Cracks in the ground.
Shriveled up bushes.
The color of bister.
The smell of sunscreen and heat fill my nose.
Dirt under our feet crunches.
Waves of heat are visible.
The lake is finally in view.
My family sings “Row, row, row your boat”.
I sing along.
Mom says this will scare the rattlesnakes.
I lick my lips.
The taste of my salty sweat makes me cringe.
These walks seemed to take forever.
But with sand in between my toes.
And a breeze from the water.
All of a sudden,
The walk seemed worth it.
