Trapped

I once was in a shooting...
I would hear a scream, shot, then another scream, shot, scream, shot, scream, shot.
I wanted to call 911
But I was too afraid that they would hear me.

I heard a familiar scream… It was my mother's...
I knew that she was gone...
Footsteps coming closer and closer to my location.
Step, Step, Step
Another familiar scream… This time it was my father...

Then I felt a bullet suddenly go through my left knee.
It was like a 2x4 board rattled my whole body.

That night I saw a light like no other.

“Should I go?
No.
I need it!
No.
Go.
No.
Follow it!
No.
You must!
No.
This is your life!
No.
Just go!
No.
Belle!
No.
This is help!
No.
Please!
No.
No…”

I was so shaken.

I remember this day with vivid colors.
Everything just flying around me.
Everything taunting me.
I still feel so trapped...

Trapped in this memory.
Something I can’t escape...
Every night it runs through me,
through my brain.

I can’t get out of this feeling!
It won’t stop!
It never will!
I am so trapped...

The author's comments:

I went to a concert over the summer, the Live Original Tour by Sadie Robertson. They had guest speakers Bonnie Kate and Max Zoghbi talk about their experience when they were in a shooting. I immedatly got inspired and wrote a poem myself. I presented this poem in class and everyone loved it, I hope you guys do too!
