The Three Miles
My mind kept running, but my legs stayed put.
Lined up and orderly foot by foot.
My stomach churned to think of what’s ahead,
but it would soon be over, and away with my dread.
Thoughts of losing drift in my mind,
I quickly set it down and focus on the line.
A man starts to ramble on about the course,
but the gun is set off and we stampede like horse.
I try to run ahead, but there’s a big cluster,
so I swerve in and out and try not to be flustered.
My feet keep moving in a rhythmic beat
The sun’s out and I already feel enveloped by heat.
I spot people ahead and pick up the pace, they don’t give up easily, because this is a race.
Shouts of encouragement become audible,
Giving me the feeling of being unstoppable.
I hear the grass crunch behind my back,
but I keep going and we soon emerge on dirt track.
Around the corner I spot teammates ahead and behind
But completing the course and giving your best effort is what counts and kept that in mind.
My breathing became heavy and my legs felt like bricks,
I wanted cold water and had chapped lips.
I didn’t know how much longer I had to go,
but I knew that my worst option was to go slow.
I spot red track in front of my eyes,
the last three hundred meters where everyone flies.
I wanted to finish right then and there,
but a person was ahead of me so I sprinted and beat them by a hair.
My right foot with the chip hit the blue mat,
the beep of approval made me want to fall flat.
I felt so accomplished for my feat,
I was so glad I was able to compete.
Water, water, water my mind pleaded.
The only source I found was a fountain, but that was all I needed.
I slowly walked around to relieve my exhaustion,
but my stomach bothered me and I felt nauseous.
I spotted an ice chest filled with sports drinks and ice,
when I took a sip it felt as if I were in paradise.
Junior varsity boys were next to run,
so as a cool down I jogged and cheered and had fun.
The sun was setting and it had a beautiful orange hue
I cheered and supported while looking at this view.
It was soon time to go once the sun had set,
homework and dinner not even done yet.
So much to do in such little time,
My eyes grew heavy and I feel asleep because it was nighttime.
