Serenade Me
I stand where the sea meets the shore
And listen
The water makes a sound
As it comes in
Turning over stones and sand
It is a hissing
Like Pop-Rocks on your tongue
It is a crackle
Like the whispers of Rice Krispies in milk
No, a fizzing
Like fresh poured soda, bubbling over
Onto land.
And above me
Seagulls fly, flapping their wings
Like broken puppets
Held up by invisible strings
And the seagulls cry
Lamentations at me below
As though they are angels
Who forgot how to sing.
