I am Human

and so are you.

But, that does not mean that we are the same.

You may have blue eyes,

I may have green eyes.

You may be short,

I may be tall.

You may be different,

So am I.

I am not immune

To the public’s different perspective of you.

I know.

I am not immune

to how you are different.

I know.

That’s what makes you extraordinary.

At parks, restaurants and stores,

I can spot the monsters who stare,

From the people that care.

The monsters

Who don’t see your future or past,

From the people that will send you love, that will last.

The people who see you apart from them.

From the people who cherish you

as life’s given gem.

The heat, the fire

That the monsters breath upon you.

Their beating red eyes

The things they say,

That they cannot undo.

How can they know?

How do they know what it’s like?

Learner later in life

How to read, write, speak and ride a bike.

But, the monsters you cannot destroy

For you are you, just a young boy.

“Love everyone,”

You believe in your heart.

For that’s what makes you one of a kind.

That’s what sets you apart.

But you,

You see through your eyes

That everyone is your friend.

Monster or not.

You will believe this always

Until the world’s end.

“Why can’t everyone believe this?”

I ask.

Equality is simple.

Is that too big of a task?

Yes!

Everyone is different.

Including the monsters.

But no,

Do not be ignorant

To the people who struggle daily

Trying to be understood,

Trying to be heard,

Trying to fit in.

Differences.

That’s why the world is so great.

Everyone should truly be equal.

Regardless of hate.

A monster is no match for your eternal love.

You are perfect, more than I could ask for

Beyond that and above.

A disability

Is no obstacle

For the public’s acceptability.

Love has no limits

And neither should the world.

The author's comments:

I dedicate this piece to my cousin, Billy, who has Down Syndrome. Throughout my life, I have learned so much from him. His sense of humor, style, outgoing personality, and smile are just four of hundreds of things that are so great about Billy. No obstacle is ever too big for him. The way he loves life is something we can all learn from and appreciate. Everyone that he touches is granted with the amazing experience of knowing this one of a kind human. I hope everyone can appreciate a loved one who experiences disabilities as much as I can.
