Best Friend
Growing up, every weekend I saw my dad
We would go to the park
And he would buy me candy
Even though my mom didn’t want him to
At the park I didn’t play
I would sit and talk with my dad
We would talk about everything
He was my best friend
As a young teenager
Things became more complex
My life consisted of late nights
And tired mornings
At night my mind would wander
To places that scared me
No amount of sleeping pills would quiet my mind
Coffee was my best friend
When I was at the darkest point in my life
She guided me into the light
While changing my perspective
Instead of a world filled with sadness and persecution
It was filled with laughter and comfort
I was able to come out of my shell
And be myself
She is my best friend
