My Father My Anchor
Never thought an anchor would secure more than a ship,
upon titanic waves overseas,
holding it down to retain firm and stiff,
I haul you up to test my leap of faith,
when the tides mound to rip.
When gray skies deliver a presence of one called gloom,
and interrupt the calm of my ocean blue,
I shall feel the illness prepare,
but trust that you will attain my flu.
Yet, water yearns to be serene amid twilight,
the motion tosses and turns me,
but as the anchor you tuck me in still to keep me safe at night,
just after I can’t sleep.
My rock who keeps me on solid ground,
when I feel lost at sea,
you reassure me I can always be found.
Your chain keeps me sane when battleships creep upon near,
to fight my wars and destroy my fears.
For you, too, can withhold my thoughts when I’m feeling weak,
because an anchor’s chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link.
And although it may not be soon.. but when the time comes to rust,
I know that shining gear must slowly turn to dust,
I will seek you, my anchor, through the midst of clear water,
on the dock of this ship that simply reads ‘daughter’.
And when I find you sinking in the depths of an ocean floor bound,
The leap of faith you taught me throughout my years when all those tides began to mound,
is enough to leap out and with you, too..
I’d drown.
