A Million Too Many
a battered shoe
caught in the mud,
and the child that treks on without it.
the scream of a bullet
as it shatters innocent flesh.
the dirty youth of a mineshaft,
stained
with the tears of a hungry earth.
the wilted plant of an empty classroom
open books stale
and posters faded.
the burden of memory
the tattered soul of tragedy
ones who were saved
ones who were left behind
the hurt
the broken
the weak
the cracked future of a million
shoeless feet
