I Wish
I wish to be assured of myself,
Only to see all the good in life I’ve done in such a short time.
To know what I plan to do with my life, how I want to spend it, where I’m going,
Only to see I will end my life in peace.
To be able to stand up for myself without second guessing each word that falls out of my mouth.
Only to see the strong, perceptive, grounded person I’ve grown up to be.
I wish to go to the land of tomorrow,
Where the world is at peace, finally unified, in spite of our differences.
To go and find a place where everyone is welcome,
Where everyone knows they belong.
To go a place where the impossible is possible,
Where anything can happen, Where anyone can do anything,
and not feel restrained by disabilities or insecurities.
I wish to meet someone who understands me,
Someone who can connect with me on a level like no one else.
To meet a person who can find a smile through the scars and pain,
Someone who will actually try and stick around.
To meet a celebrity that can give me valuable advice based off of their mistakes,
Someone who has had low points in their life but has once again found the light.
To meet someone won’t just walk through the door, collect sentimental objects,
and walk out the door when finished.
I wish to have control,
Never feel out of place.
To have knowledge,
Never in shock or disappointment.
To have a simple life,
Never have complications, they bring tears.
But all these things I do have give me knowledge and help me find who I am.
Though wishes are what keep some of us going, they can also remind us of what we
Don’t have.
Become enriched in what you have. Reach for your dreams. Work hard.
That’s how wishes come true.

As an assignment for my Freshman Writing Seminar class, my teacher had us write poems about wishes. We could either write about somewhere we wish to go, someone we wish to meet, what we wish to have, or something we want to be. I decided to write about all of them because in order for wishes to be fulfilled, you must see them in full image to know exactly where you want to go. The things discussed in my poem are the places I wish to go, the person I wish to meet, what I wish to have, and who I want to be.
