I See Her Now
Her sunken eyes dart frantically
criticizing the bodies around her
Curious faces turn
to her gaunt figure
Her trembling fingers tear each other apart
Thick blood paints her nails
As she clumsily struts away
a blizzard of broken hairs
reveal her path
She lags behind her skipping friends
failing to mask agonizing exhaustion
with a stiff
plastered smile
Passing by
alarmed pedestrians
count her every rib
protruding from her dying flesh
Downy white hairs
and mountainous bumps
blanket her shivering skin
attempting to capture
the evasive warmth
She lies in bed each night
twitching her toes
flexing imaginary muscles
She waits for death’s silent knock
permitting her to escape the bodily prison
she unknowingly created
She imagines her parents’ reaction
when they discover
her cold lifeless shell
rigid underneath every blanket she owns
This is the girl I see
in past pictures
past memories
This girl was me
