Constancy in War
I try to keep my mind on the sun,
for it was there
before if felt the heavy weight of a gun.
And at night I keep my mind on the moon,
for it was there
before I watched my best friend die too soon.
The earth seems to shatter
as screams of despair batter.
And the wind whispers
goodbyes that never reached
mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters.
So I keep my mind on the sun and the moon
in this soul-stripping land where bodies are strewn.
