Stair Whispers
Am I the only one who hears whispers from the corners of stairwells?
The only one with voices in the back of her mind?
The voices of my peers, my mentors, my invisible admirers
all colliding and mashing together as I turn the corner
And place my first foot upon the staircase.
I don't know whether to accept the compliments,
Whether to turn and sneer when insults come in waves;
I simply put my second foot in front of the first
straighten my head,
pretending like like nobody's there
like I'm nobody talked to, nobody heard, nobody listening.
