Who has suffered from such hopeless love,
dismissed devotion, renounced rapture?
Whose mind has been plagued by fruitless questions,
by whispers of sense and howls of gall,
by ghosts of smiles and forlorn sighs,
a kind of shame as she passes you by
by melting ecstasies of shame and fear,
of bitter delight, and sweet despair?
