friends are hard to make,
easy to lose.
you can meet a million
swim through an ocean of people
just to find that one in a million
who will swim with you.

friends are hard to replicate,
easy to take for granted.
you can be lonely in a crowded room
drowning in an empty cacophony of meaningless voices
but you can also find the world in a single person
look into their eyes and drown in companionship instead.

friends are hard to hate,
easy to love.
you can go to war with them
battling until you forget why
but you will always love them in the end
finding an eternal shelter in their arms.

friends are hard to break,
easy to connect.
you can live next door
inseparable in your daily adventures
you can have the entire world between you
and still feel them next to you.

friends are hard to forget,
easy to last forever.
you can weave a tapestry of colors
threads connecting in silent promises
years may pass like the steady rush of a river
but you will always remember.

friends are the pebbles at the bottom of a brook-
some are sharp and hurt your feet;
some are specked with dirt;
and some still are odd shapes that fall into one another.

but sometimes you can find a stone washed clean by the stream;
a stone iridescent when you hold it in the sunlight.
they’re hard to find and even harder to hold-

so clasp your hand around it
and never let go.
