United, If Only For The Night
As you pull me near, I hear your whispers in my ear,
that high alto dripping with insincerity,
sweet little lies I know all too well.
our dirty sneakers come to rest as they become acquainted,
an agreement reached without a word,
we trade them in for dancing shoes tonight.
pretending not to notice the cigarette smog that fills our lungs,
the stars in your eyes shine just enough to penetrate it’s haze,
and the wet thumping in our chests divulge to form a broken symphony.
And when the ghosts come calling, as they always do,
we’ll pretend not to hear their luring howls,
the space between us now far too narrow for them to slither into.
our cold hands clasp bone on bone, fortifying our bluff,
rascal monarchs among the displaced,
the night shrouds us, imagination fills it’s gaps.
dazed and detached we make quite a pair,
me who can’t stop running and you so stoic,
different cages, same flawed wings,
united, if only for the night.
