My eyes drifted up from the carved meat
on my plate
to the skin and bones across from me
it ached
a part of me sank
and I shrunk back down in my seat
face blank
he smiled slyly
and offered me kindly
the peas
but I wanted to say
please
stop trying to please me
please
it’s not nice to tease me
don’t let me believe
that this is you now
that you won’t leave now
because I don’t know how
I would deal with the pain
if you decide to gamble with your life again.
