Gracie
In my dream last night, I saw your crooked smile
The way that your hair fell around your face like a princess
But no matter how hard I tried
I could not recall the color of your eyes
This lapse in memory caused me to cry
I fell to my knees and tears streamed down
As I begged you to tell me the hue
Or come closer, so I could examine in detail
The colors and shapes that made up your appearance
But you remained aloof and far away, still smiling
Every step I took forward seemed to cause you to move further back
Not a word you spoke all this time, and that is when I realized
I couldn't remember the sound of your voice
Not a sentence, not a single word that you had ever spoken to me
It was all beyond my grasp, no matter how long I searched
Nowhere in the recesses of my consciousness was the sound of your laugh
As I sat there, I knew that no longer would my memories
Bring to mind the conversations we had, the thoughts we shared
And I will never have the chance to contact you and remind myself
Of the tones and inflection of your voice
Because the place where you are now living is too far away
For me to call you collect and catch up on old times
Upon waking this morning, with tears drying on my face
I frantically looked through my photos and found your smiling face
A sigh of relief passed through me...
Blue. Your eyes were blue.
