The Only One Awake
The relief and escape of sleep
Evade me,
Like a wary bird
Flying higher than the range
Of a hunter’s bow.
I sit enveloped in my thoughts,
With only the moon and stars
For company.
Silent and ponderous,
I wonder about things
Long gone and faded,
And recall memories
As sharp as shards of glass,
That cut my mind
Into many scattered pieces
That I attempt to glue back together.
