Forboding Hearts Still Beat

Roads keep winding on as the clop of horses slow, their footsteps carrying a lost love.
Clanging at the gate echoes, unnerving as it welcomes a new resident.
Spine-chilling spears guard the ground, staring coldly, standing straight.

Light fades as darkness collapses in, blanketing the city in blood.
Shadows stretch long, towering over crumbling graves of years past.
Fires light in their metal cages, biting at the night.

Vast Post oaks moan loudly as their branches creak and bend in the whistling wind.
Falling leaves rustle as if it were the dead themselves walking, whispers reaching out to the ears of the living.
A shriek splits the night.

A dripping ladle of questions arise as steam.
Why so soon?
How could this happen?
Will he truly rest in peace?

Perplexing thoughts fill the clouded silence.
Doubt, grief, and foreboding insert themselves into the hearts still beating.
The hole grows wider, the blackness of it an open mouth, waiting to consume.
Dirt hits with a thud, then a shurrrrrrr…
Only a whisper…
Only a whisper …
Only a whisper…

Extremely interesting... Is this a play on The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe? Just feels that way to me... Amazing imagry, by the way. "A dripping ladle of questions arise as steam". Great work.
