Take me back to that time
Where cigarettes were illegal in my mind
And sex was a drug that I chose not to hit
Well looking back now, it’s all turned to s***

From the day that it arose
I was bright eyed and red cheeked from head to toe
My first sip of wine
Next to the love of mine

And the friends that I had were melting away
Though, new friends dawned with the passing days
But this crowd was different from the last
There was much more to do in contrast

One hit won’t hurt you, they’d say
You never get addicted your first time, anyway
So I took in a breath that lasted an hour
When I came to, I was with him in the shower

I don’t remember how I got there
Why he was rubbing and shampooing my hair
Where were my clothes and who was he
How on Earth did he even know me

Just relax, take a hit, is all he would say
His skin was so soft that I couldn’t go away
So I took one more hit, it couldn’t hurt, right
My memory slipped for the rest of the night

In the following months I faded in and out
Between parties and men, there was no room for doubt
My skin sunk within me, my face was just bone
My warm beating heart had turned to cold stone

Sometimes I wondered what happened to the light
For all my waking hours were spent in the night
Just a fleeting thought, though, compared to the rest
These were the days, I assumed, were the best

Then one evening we were shooting up in a hall
And I walked past a mirror that led to the stalls
When I saw my reflection, which gave me a fright
What stood before me was a ghost of pale white

Her face was all twisted in a terrified glare
Her eyes were a distant and foggy stare
Her soft brown hair which had flown down her back
Was cut to her ears and died charcoal black

I put down the needle and started to cry
Told my friends to go on and leave me to die
They laughed and were loud, then suddenly had gone
I sat in the hall until early dawn

This was the first sunrise I’d seen in a while
Through my shattered lips I felt a smile
The sun was warm and invited me in
I decided my life would surely begin
