Camaro Z/28
I watched her fingers entwine in her lap
As min twitched nervously at the wheel
I’ve grown to know the back of her hands so well
And that thought is enough to make mine shake
The quiet bass of rock & roll
Echoed in her ears
She knew my heart beat at her rhythm
I told her how loud it is in my chest
And that it’s only for her to hear
“And this is where I always am,”
I often dream her say,
“Right in this moment
Where your moon-eyes shined bright
Your smile and voice like the stars’ rain
Your every wish flooded me
With the pitter-patter of your happy voice
And with its sweet calm, it lulled me
Carefully, peacefully, tenderly to dreams.”
It’s so bittersweet
To trace this memory
Of the girl on the right
She layed under the sunroof
Sunshine drowned out the air around her
But my night-eyes held her
The day was no match, she told me,
She felt restless, fearless, limitless
In dreams, I stop here
With her beautiful eyes and…
But in nightmares, she continues,
“And then came that ominous screech
It was loud and bright
I was strapped against my leather grave
But between the seatbelt and the airbag
Was your swift arm
It grasped my right shoulder
And my heart was safe beneath your freckled skin
But my body lurched beyond its boundaries
My wide eyes closed tight
Glass shattered all around me
Pain should have filled me
But all I could feel was the fear of the day
And the comfort of you, my moon
Sound stood still
Until there was no sound,
No feeling at all.”
The last thing she could have hear
As the night’s rain began to pour
Was my quivering voice as I begged and begged
“You’re bleeding, baby,
Breathe, baby, please don’t be dead.”
