Hate/Love
“Can’t things be like they used to be?”
I whispered softly in his ear
As he lay beside me in deep slumber
Beyond the waves of his dream island
His face, relaxed, was much like an angel
Without the worries of the day upon it
In fact, I didn’t recognize this person
Whom I’d kissed a million times
But we were older, tired from the day
The tragic things we’d said to each other
And never apologized or regretted
Except for this moment when I felt him breathing
This beautiful body, which I had corrupted
How could I bear to remain by his side?
Knowing his skin was like satin, but heart had turned black
All because of our lives intertwining
Some say love is meant to be and never fails
Yet this love was tortured and hostile
The more we were alike, the more our words collided
And the more we yelled, the more we fell deeper
Yes, this love of mine was abnormal and hurtful
I could feel myself shaking and crying each waking morning
All to stay with him, even though we were killing each other
Or to leave him, and set our lives free
“Can’t things be like they used to be?
Before we met, I knew happiness.
Now I only know sorrow and sickly love.
But I’m so afraid to be alone…”
He opened his eyes as my whispers died in the waves of his island
And turned to my side of the bed which was empty
