The Absent Mind of Her
She woke at midnight and grabbed her keys
Quietly she slipped out the front door
Her hands we shaking and her mind a whirl
When she got in her car and drove away
Her mom was a sleep, her brother in bed
The stars were vague and black filled the night
Except for a the shimmer of a sliver of moon
And the headlights of night drivers who passed her by
She said she would drive ‘til she ran out of gas
Then walk as far as her legs would go
And if that wasn’t enough she’d walk even further
Until she found what kept her awake
Soon the sun peaked the earth and shown through her eyes
As the car slowly idled and drifted to the side of the road
Then she opened the door and didn’t look back
And walked down the road with the morning dew
She walked through wheat fields, hills, valleys
She walked over mountains, train tracks, streams
And met strange and beautiful people along the way
Who begged for food and drank with the long day
Some men tried to buy her to stay for the night
Others just watched as she straggled along
And when she was thirsty she’d drink in the sky
And when she was hungry she’d eat from the air
Then one day just as sun was setting, she saw the blue
The deep, endless blue which she most hungered for
Before reaching the sand, she pulled of her dirty shoes
And stepped one foot on the beach, sinking slowly
Her body was skinny and sick from the journey
As her feet led her further onto the shore
Where land met the ocean is where she collapsed
When her hand met the water she started to cry
She was found in the water early the next morning
Nothing much but skin and bones and ragged clothing
It was said all she had was a water stained note
That read, “Hark, now hear the sailors cry,
smell the sea, and feel the sky
let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic...-Van Morrison”
