The Walk of Eternal Youth
Obscure as the night before my trail
I wandered out into the dark
Hoping that stars would break this spell
That had fallen upon my withered heart
All that guided me was an ashen shine
Which poured from the slit in the clouds above
It reminded me of a younger time
When all that I thought of revolved around love
Ahead of me, sounds of laugher arose
And I couldn’t help but bend my ear
Hearing the coos of children at play
Dancing, dining, kissing, drinking beer
Though I only stayed for a while
To peer through the window and watch them smile
They never even glanced my way
It had seemed I’d become one with the shadows outside
So I watched my feet as they shuffled along
Too soon the sound of their laughter faded
Til I came upon a flowing river
Deep as an abyss and strikingly jaded
I slowly sank into the frigid water
Then all but my face was engulfed by the black
The current was strong and began to pull me away
I closed my eyes and floated on my back
When I came to the sun was above me
All that was heard were birds and the river
My legs wouldn’t move, my arms couldn’t bend
The remainder of my life was cold and bitter
