The Distance
He didn't think he'd see her like that. Alone walking the distance. He wished he said something as his car drove by. He couldn't dismiss the thought. Whether it was pity for her having to walk so far alone and seemingly unhappy or his secret love for her, he did not know. He sent her a message expecting no response. She politely replied that it was fine for her, as she walked that distance every day. He wasn't certain whether she was being polite, or was unwilling to see him. He then replied once more to confirm her denial, this time referencing the longevity of her daily commute in the hopes to sound more friendly. To his dismay, she said the distance was easy for her, that she was fine. He hoped she was fine, because he wasn't. It was the distance from her that killed him.
