Mixed Paint
A drop of black blood
turns a whole person black
the census bureau makes
me seem tainted - unnatural
I cannot choose multiracial.
What are you?
Not mixed, just black,
just white, never native
I must wear three masks
I cannot be multiracial.
I have “white”
features, but “black” hair,
and my skin falls somewhere
in between the cracks
of white and black
Puerto Rican? Hawaiin?
Do you come from an island?
Maybe the island of misfit toys
where children are not black or white
but just children.
