Let me tell you a story about
Floppy rainboots and
Sparkly Skirt
Just a boy and a girl
Who thought they ran the world

And they did
Until it ended.
The second graders
Point, laugh, shout
Stand in wicked groups,
Push them out
They claim "We know our letters"
"Older, we're older and better"

Sparkly Skirt puts on a mask
An unbelievably difficult task
Hard and unbroken
But she used to be soft spoken
"PUH-lease"
"I don't need you, you probably have fleas"
Animals, she doesn't need them
But she thinks she does
The sting of rejection, cold as ice
Kills her innocence,
Strikes once, twice, thrice

Floppy Rainboots runs away
"It's okay, I'll deal with them some other day"
He hides
Reverts back to the small boy inside
He sees she is tough but
He knows his skin isn't thick enough
To take the sting, the cold
And his body is young
But his heart is old
So he runs and runs
Chases his shadow in the evening sun

Second Graders
Just a petty clique
But
They know their letters and
They'll eat you up quick

I found myself sitting on a park bench watching the children push and tug each other in this endless battle and started thinking about how we're all just animals with nothing to do but make a claim in this world.
