Heavy Eyelids
I've always found that the purest essence of someone is revealed beneath the moonlight
The late-night talks held between two broken spirits are always far deeper than ones spoken in the middle of the day
Because after the bell tolls midnight people begin to let their guards down
Their carefully constructed facades begin to crumble, as one becomes too tired to care
about what others may think of the words about to be uttered
The soft-spoken soul comes out from hiding, muttering a quiet "hello,
It's good to see you. I hope you understand."
And it's a shame, really, that we can only show our true selves when our minds are jumbled
When the absence of the sun shrouds our faces in shadow
I suppose words always seem more bitter in the daylight anyways
The nighttime is safer to the hesitant syllable, the environment less harsh
But my favorite thing about these 4 AM discussions, is when the sun rises again
And you begin to hear the birds chirp as the world wakes up outside your window
Looking over at the person beside you, seeing her sleep-deprived gaze
But her face is brighter than it would be under the brightest midday sun
Inner illumination peeking from her pores
Because in the night, your slates have been cleaned
While everyone else in the world has just woken up, returning to their unchanged lives
A burden has been lifted from your shoulders, even though it is just for the time being
you know everything is more bitter in the daylight
But in that moment, it simply does not matter
an unspoken pact from the sleepless night lingers in the air
And you know that as the sun rises, you will face the day
