I Ain't Pray, Because Ain't Nobody Good There
5 years old and my dog got sick
And I prayed for days he'd live.
God was there and so he did.
A year later my dog was hit by a car.
10 years old I cried myself to sleep every night.
I prayed and prayed my parents would stay together.
And god was there and my parents never split.
By 11 I could only hope for a divorce to end the hitting and the screaming.
15 years old and I loved a boy with all my hopes and dreams and soul.
And I prayed and prayed the rumors weren't true.
And god was there so my mind saw what truth was told.
Ten months later my heart fell in on itself.
17 years old and my best friend slit their wrists and hoped to die.
I prayed they'd never cut their breath short of the next sunrise.
And god was there so they woke up the next morning.
Five weeks later my best friend woke in a physco hospital, alone.
18 years old and I drive around with my own license and white car.
And I don't pray to live through the inevitable car crash, because I'm a bad driver.
I know god would say "okay!"
But the dead bodies of the other drivers would be too much to bear.
