Dord-
-a Merriam-Webster ghost word (1931-1939)
was density,
a measure of how many atoms
can be pressed into one space,
how many shouts echoed
through one skull, and
how many things a mind’s eye can
blink away.
An accident of time allowed
just eight years of life,
then destroyed in a frenzied fit
of pure white heat, a tidy world
distressed and befuddled
because too many words were stuffed
into one lexicographer’s head
so he, with tired eyes and
deep impatience, saw D or d
as one entity and
made a word that never was.
