Waking

Birds sing.
Consciousness springs.

I lift my eyelids slowly,
experimentally,
like a child peeling petals
off a flower.

The still air hums
to the vibrant tune
of an almost forgotten
energy.

Sunshine welcomes itself
into my room,
sweeping night's darkness
under the rug.
It's a game they play --
nature's hide-and-go-seek.

Rough blue sheets tangle up
around my legs as the day's
rough blue tasks tangle up
around my mind.

I swing my legs off the bed,
out of the rough blue sheets.
The day begins.
