If there's a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison

We can see in the dark,
real people
we see the true person inside each body, we don't see the difference between us
we are friends,
we are family,
we are one
we see the truth hiding inside,
no longer needing to wear our masks,
we cannot judge by color, race or religion
we only see their
soul
the one thing that makes them,
them and is really important nothing else,
we are
all
equal
no wall or rift between us nothing to separate
no more wars to fight
no more tears to shed
we finally understand and feel for each other,
but
the question is,
why can't we see,
in the
light?

I was inspired to write this poem when we were watching the movie Freedom Writers in my English class, we we were having loads of discussions on racism and equality and how we felt about this in our society. At the time I was also having trouble writing a poem for a poetry contest and I wanted something very powerful that could deliver a strong message. So I decided to send it in and I ended up wining 1st in my state. So this poem is very important to me and I just wanted people to understand that everyone is equal and the color of our skins or religion doesn't make us weaker or lesser in our world. I feel strongly about this because I myself am African American and I want my peers to see that I'm just like them.
