Alcoholism
Clogging my mind, the memories won’t stay out,
Painfully reminding me like a punch in the stomach.
Like poison the alcohol brainwashes him,
As he picks up another drink, another fight, another tear.
Turns him from the loving father and husband to a terrifying creature.
The screaming, unbearable…heartbreaking,
Scared for dear life, we don’t say a word.
How far will he go this time?
Sparked by a simple notion of anger, I can’t block these memories.
Apology after apology, the meaning starts to fade.
When will it end?
My mother finally had enough.
Boxes of clothes and dishes, it’s time to leave.
Relief streams through my body as he walks out the door.
No more stressful nights filled with misery and worry,
No more pain.
The burning fire in my heart still remains, but he does not.
