January Eighteenth
Tonight we’ll dream in reds
The only sound a gentle purr and crackle outside our door
And your steady breathing until there is none
Until your lungs become as black and awful as mine
We’ll submerge ourselves in white sheets
Beneath the sea of comforter mattress pillow
And we’ll hold each other for a while until
Until we are only mouths and tongues and teeth and bone and flame
Tonight we husband our last breath through joined lips
and leave our souls to the sky and bodies to the surgeons
As the curtains burn from the bottom up
and the wallpaper curls
and our home fades and flickers with our health
Tomorrow we’ll bloom with the tulips
