Conform or Perish
I hate this place, full of phony smiles,
The people you call your best friends,
But secretly you’d be better without them
The way you tell a person you love them,
After just making their acquaintance,
The way the only way to feel good around here,
Is to light up and pass the bowl around
The way you all say later,
“That was such a good time!”
But really, you were intoxicated,
And you never say those words after being sober
The way everyone around you,
Lost their innocence a long time ago,
Including you.
The way you lost the people who were your
“Best friends forever”, over petty drama,
And who can even remember how it started?
The way every laugh feels forced,
And you forget the last time you found something
Truly amusing
e way all anyone seems to care about,
Is who you’re seen with,
What you wear, how you’re wearing it,
If you’ll get into the best school,
To have several more years trapped in a classroom,
To get the best job,
To spend your entire life working,
And thriving to be better than everyone else.
What ever happened to trying to be happy?
To fulfilling those basic needs,
Then surrounding yourself by people you love,
In a place you love?
You could never get to that even if you tried,
Society’s got us too deeply intertwined,
In this life, in this mindset,
And it’s either conform or perish
