They hummed to attempt mutiny
They later hummed to keep the peace,
They hummed when they were lonely
And they hummed for something heavenly,
They hummed so they could keep sane
They hummed to try and ease the pain,
They hummed to fill the void-
They hummed to pretend they weren't a slave.


The author's comments:
I was reading about slavery in America the other day and thought how sad it was. How sad they probably were. And I kind of just envisioned them humming to feel secure. Important in a way.
