What I Fear

I.
I fear pain
not death-
both are infinite,
but one is a star on the soft lips of the Milky Way-
far,
and the other is a finger pressing against your jugular vein-
so, so close.
II.
I fear the past,
not the future-
both are infinite,
but one is the shiver of toes on the edge of a diving board-
pale and raw,
and the other is the blackened body of a struck match-
cold and smoking.
III.
I fear myself,
not others-
both are mortal,
but one has the power to
scar my skin,
and one has the ability to
scar my soul.
