37 moons you asked me for
yet i struggle to make even one
if i could catch one down i would
a lighting for your already perfect face
just so i would never have to look away
though of course you will protest
that i have said too much
& meant too little
when i said i wanted to spend eternity
matched step for step by your side
you will detangle my meanings
i will stare at your face longer
than what we originally thought justified
for though the moonshape keeps changing
& i keep measuring out vowels
the reliability of feeling keeps us in check
when we are gray & solemn like cement--
& just as concretely sure of things
i will still never understand what you see
by distances so great & uncharted we will run
separated by just one moon phase
that i twist sideways to see better so i can catch it
catch it down from heaven--
where you refused to live even when offered gold
for the prospect of god being graced he said
i can never see your face enough
& i will breathe out feeling into the moon
that i’m failing to draw out of hiding
this lasts for eternity you say
but i hesitate to believe you every second
for like the color of sky i am insecure
yet you pull on the earth to press me right--
right when i’m turning left over left to see
the moon going into hiding & we look around
for the stars but you couldn’t find them
so all that remained was to wait for the moon
to brave eternity & glow over you again
