"Fall in love? I'd rather fall in chocolate"

- Me :D

You used to be so innocent
Took your perfect life for granted
Everything was simpler then

But life, like a fake friend,
Pulls you onto your feet again,
Leads you to believe
Everything will be alright,
Only to shove you back down.

All you ever dreamed about was growing up
Every year older was just not enough
Because life would be perfect when you were older (not true)
You only wish you had known that then
You only wish you could go back again

To when you didn’t have to think about smiling-
One would just stay on your face,
Back to when life moved with you
And at the right pace

But life, like a fake friend,
Pulls you onto your feet again,
Leads you to believe
Everything will be alright,
Only to shove you back down.

Dont you wish you could go back again?
To tell yourself to enjoy those moments
Before you had to worry
Tell yourself not to group up too fast
And take your time not to hurry
Because you’ll regret it when your youth is past

Dont you wish you could go back again?
To when there was no pain in love
And no grief ice-cream couldn’t cure
When you were accepted for who you were
Not the mask you wore.

Do you remember when you were painfully honest?
And blissfully unaware of others lies?
When life was seamless but you didn’t notice
And all you wanted was to grow up

But now you’re wishing you could back again.

The author's comments:
I was thinking about how fast I'm growing up when the idea for this poem came to me. I haven’t written any poetry in about a year but I just spent 2 straight hours trying to get this out on paper. My younger brothers and sister are always wanting to grow older, saying things like "one day I'm going to be as old as you" and when their birthdays finally come the first thing they say is "NEXT year I'm going to be ___!" I'm beginning to realize that we as people put too much emphasis on growing up, then once we ARE grown up, on staying youthful.
"Kids these days!" LOL
