Best friends for however long you feel like it

When I needed you
to come and help me stand,
you watched from afar as I toppled over.
When I needed you
to get me out of my cage,
you were busy leaving yours in the dust.
When I needed you
to keep me from drowning,
you laughed it off.
I needed you,
and then I realized-
you didn’t care enough.
