The Infant
He laid
Sprawled out like a flattened
tumbleweed
Bones jutting like snapped dead
rose stems
Shadows cascaded over his grey
mocha skin
Highlighting places that were too
dry.
Like cracked Earth with paths
leading to a river
Frothing
flowing
In the continuous streams that were
his tears
His voice moaned like a low
mourning roll of thunder
Emotions flashing one after the
other
Like lightening
His tiny fists grasped at the air
Desperately clinging to any bit of
life he could catch
Climbing the ladder of minutes that
counted of his life.
I put my hands in my pockets
Hunched my shoulders
I didn't know this child
And he didn't know me
He cries and cries until I can't
not look anymore
Everything about him
Screams ONE THING
I turn
Look into his eyes
And see...
Recognition.
The child knows me
Arms outstretched
Awaiting love
And reassurance
Just like Jonny used to do...
