Innocence
Innocence
Snapping carrots into halves
with their short, stubby fingers
watching them fall, to the angry ground
knowing someone else will be picking them up
Falling on the cement sidewalk and tearing
holes, in their jeans
crying as they get lifted from the forgiving ground
knowing someone else will sew the hole
Holding ice cream as if it were gold,
laughing while the dog licks the cone
and their pink faces
knowing someone else will clean their
sticky chins
Wanting to “get big”
and go on in the world
not knowing they will forever be wishing
that they could turn back the hands of time
to where they are today
and be carefree and stress less
as only a child knows how
