My Personal December
The world gasps for snow
But no longer do I wait for you
In the cold months of autumn
You punched the air out of my chest
Wrapped vines around my throat
Made me a penniless fool
Stole the life from my eyes
Now as the winter descends
Those dark vines slowly die
Revealing a glittering forest of white
This is my personal December
As dark days descend
There is light piercing through grey clouds
Urging me to break through the mist
All the thorns I stabbed my skin with
Red blood dripping onto the grey earth
Telling me I’m nothing at all
No longer am I lost in the bitter nothingness
Let crystals of snow fill up the silence
I hang lights across my doorstep
Chasing away those gnawing shadows
As the world descends into the shimmer of winter
As the cold, clear days turn to freezing blizzards
Winds carry the brambles away
No longer am I scared of the dark
As the Earth falls into the grips of ice
As long shadows climb and as the rain turns to snow
Inside my heart is thawing
I’m no longer yours to take
Winter blooms, sparks in my eyes
Some days your fingertips claw at my skin
But I’m not made of glass anymore
Instead I am a windy lake, skating on the surface
Fringed by pine trees, sky of icy blue
Nose red, eyes bright, laughing at you
Huddled cold and destroyed in the corner
While I have the hearth and the glow of this
Translucent world, opening so I can see
The world just behind my eyes.
