The Proclamation
lies fall from your chapsticked lips
like shattered teeth
I pick them off the linoleum table and
swallow them whole
even though they scratch my throat
like kitten claws
the pain is too pale to kill me
just enough to leave a you-sized scar
hours spent breathing the same air
and pretending to be people
with something in common but
you and me are different animals.
